Montreal single-to-double-pane upgrade — ditch the cold glass

Still stuck with single-pane windows? One thin layer of glass runs ice-cold, frosts over, sweats condensation onto the sill and pours a draft into the room.

  • Every opening measured on-site
  • Full air-seal on every unit
  • Written frame + sealed-glass warranty
Single-to-double-pane window upgrade in Montreal — warmer sealed glass

Why it matters

Leave cold single-pane glass behind

Single-pane glass is the biggest comfort and efficiency weak point in older Montreal homes. One thin layer has almost no insulating value, so it runs cold, frosts over on hard mornings, sweats condensation onto the sill and lets the winter draft pour off the pane. No amount of weatherstripping fixes the glass itself.

Upgrading to sealed double- or triple-pane changes all of it — two or three panes with an argon gap and a Low-E coating insulate the opening properly for warmer glass, no frost and a real drop in heat loss.

For our winters we usually recommend triple-pane glass, though even quality double-pane beats single glass. Where a frame is rotted we will suggest full-frame replacement; where it is sound, a retrofit insert keeps it fast.

Line-item quote with the window line, glass package, U-factor, warranty and haul-away on one page. Financing attached when you want it.

  4. Install, cleanly

Drop cloths, boot covers and a full air-seal on every unit. Old windows hauled away and a walkthrough of your new windows plus warranty registration.

What you get

Warmer, quieter, drier rooms you feel

The upgrade cuts drafts, reduces the condensation that rots sills and grows mould, and lowers outside noise — improvements you notice the first cold evening, not years later. Warmer glass means you can actually use the space by the window in winter instead of avoiding it.

We size the glass to each opening, register a written frame-and-glass warranty, and file rebate paperwork for qualifying ENERGY STAR upgrades. Fix a foggy sealed unit at the same time, or see every replacement option at your free measure.

Common questions

Montreal single-to-double-pane upgrade, answered

Warmth, double-versus-triple and condensation on the upgrade.

Dramatically warmer. A single pane has almost no insulating value, so its interior surface sits close to the outdoor temperature — that is why it feels cold and frosts over. A sealed double- or triple-pane unit traps insulating air or argon between the panes and adds a Low-E coating, which keeps the inside surface far warmer and stops the cold-glass draft that single-pane windows create. You feel it as a room that is comfortable right up to the glass instead of a cold zone you avoid sitting near, and the heating system cycles less to keep up.
For most Montreal homes, triple-pane is the better long-term choice given how cold and long our winters are — the extra pane and gas gap noticeably improve comfort and cut condensation on the coldest walls. Quality double-pane is still a huge leap over single glass and can be the right call on a tighter budget or on sheltered, less-exposed openings. At the estimate we put the price and the performance difference side by side so you can decide — often triple on the north and west, double where it is sheltered — rather than one spec everywhere.
Upgraded glass greatly reduces interior condensation, because the warm inner pane stays above the dew point on all but the harshest mornings, so you lose the frost and dribble that single-pane windows produce. Very humid homes — lots of occupants, cooking, plants or a humidifier running high — may still see a little condensation on the very coldest days, but far less than before. Managing indoor humidity and running bathroom and kitchen fans helps the rest of the way. We can point out any humidity sources worth addressing at the measure.
Yes — you can start with the coldest, most-used rooms and phase the rest; even a handful of upgrades makes those rooms noticeably more comfortable.
Argon is an inert gas sealed between the panes that slows heat transfer better than air, so it lowers heat loss and helps keep the glass warm.

Left single-pane behind and the difference is huge — warm glass, no frost in the morning and a much quieter bedroom.

The old glass was ice-cold to touch. The new sealed units cut the draft and the condensation right away.
