Why does my window sash stick?

Usually one of a few things: the wood has swollen with humidity, layers of old paint have built up in the track, the balances have worn so the sash sits crooked, or the sash itself has dropped or racked out of square. Will fixing the sash stop the draft?

Often, yes — a dropped or ill-fitting sash is a very common source of window drafts, because if the sash does not close evenly against the frame, the weatherstripping cannot make full contact and cold air slips through the gap. Bringing the sash back to true so it presses tight into the seal all the way around frequently cures the draft on its own, and pairing that with fresh weatherstripping seals it completely. We check the fit and the seal together so we solve the draft at its source.
